Big flashy effects are out if they cause slowdown or seriously mess with the
game, but for GW2, at least, it'd be nice if they at least tried a bit
more to make the effects look less......lame.
Some are okay, but here are a couple complaints:
A maelstrom really should NOT look like a really cheap Windows Media Player
visualization.
An eruption should NOT look like a dust cloud a foot off the ground.
Spells that do instant, large damage shouldn't have slow animations. Shatter
Hex and Inferno should have their flashiness appear at the same time as their
damage, not have some silly, slowly developing effect that occurs several odd
seconds after damage has been dealt.
One more complaint in general: you shouldn't have to specifically be looking for the effects in order to see them.

Better Visual Effects To Skills?
Elite Skills deserve that, not regular ones.
Think about how Hex Eater Vortex would look...

While monking the Dev hammer animation is ftl.
I've messed up so many times because of the lag I've gotten because of that stupid animation.

/sign for GW2
This is one of the main reasons why people say WoW > GW. Flashier skills are not only just for looks, but they reward careful observation -- if you can just look at a certain character in GvG and see his animation, you can maybe prepare for it. This holds especially true for Mesmers (interrupt/divert key skill) and Monks (predict spikes)

You can have that for some skills already... just invite a random 13 year old Warrior or Assassin player to youe vent or TS channel....
Hey presto... you have the perfect casting sound for Spitefull Spirit or Migrane
But now for something completely different (back OT)
/Signed for the elite skills to be more flashy. Especially for mesmers (havent played one myself yet) but I always make sure I bring at least one henchie or player mesmer with me if I can.

the idea is kind of cool, but i dont think it'd work very well.
as others have mentioned, so many skills are going off at the same time in a battle. the screen would get cluttered with all kinds of animations which would be distracting and very laggy. Guild Wars flows very well now. and its set up to be about how you play, not how it looks. i think it works well tbh and should probably stay the same.

It would end up causing too much lag.
What about people that want to run it on "High", but because of the skill flashiness, can only run it on "Medium, I'd feel pretty screwed.
I'll /sign only if it is able to be toggled.
otherwise /notsign

lol...there are skill effects of ancient old MMRPG's like Ragnarok Online 1, which look even much better, than some skill effects of certain GW Skills
'nuff said
Compare only the Meteor Shower from Guild Wars with the Meteor Shower Spell from Wizards/High Wizards in Ragnarok Online ...
a huge difference and the old skill of RO looks and sounds much better, than the one of GW.
And why ? because the meteors of RO hav that, what such a skill needs too look realistic and cool - a large burning tail and an explosion effect, when the meteors hit the ground...
Meteor Shower in GW looks, as if only fall some rocks of the size of a basket balls down and they have absolutely no fire effects >.< theortically effectwise Anet just could put this Skill under Earth Magic, instead of Fire Magic -.-
Ya, skills really net to receive for GW2 much better effects, skills in MMORPG's have to be eye candy ^^, especially all the elemental Skills

It could definately be done.
To all the people claiming "lag oh NOEZ," remeber that GW2 will be running on A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ENGINE.
A.net can impliment and code things in such a way to make skills flasher without damaging the game. Just think of how spliter shot has its own unique animiation that is a lot flasher then most. Does it lag the game? No.
Anyway, I forsee a new breed of W/Mos in GW2 who use Mending because it has the coolest looking animation in the game.

What the GW version needs is a good definition of the area of effect, not that blurry dust.

Do you guys know how much lagg just a little bit better graphics can cause? (In the engine I'm using, making a particle that is just 1.3 times better can cause 2 seconds of lagg...it's hard work!)
/unsigned out of consideration of the graphics workers at ArenaNet.

Seen a thread like this. Anyone ever watched the original GW trailer? I just tried to find it on the official GW site but they changed their site up and I don't know where they hid it. Anyways, the graphics from that were a lot cooler than the game ever was. Kind of a bit of a letdown, although I played the game before ever seeing the trailer.
I once even saw a thread to allow for Warriors to be able to flip which hand they were carrying their sword and shield in.
Anyways, there is no need for this addition to the game.

GW in its first stages looked too much like WoW. If it still looked like WoW when it was released in retail I would have never bought it, I personally hate over-cartoonified graphics.

yeah this too XD
Imagine only a Meteor Shower with realistic epic Area of Effect Spell, with huge area, but randomous targets receive damage or so, and way much more meteor should fall down per second.
The most epic Meteor Shower on Movie was still Armageddon imo
New York Meteor Shower
hwen Meteor Shower would look in GW2 much more like this, that would be somewhat of impressive and awesome, just epic and cool.
Also in this Movie you see meteors of the right scale...they don't look there like in GW, as if burning basket balls would fall down - no!! The meteors in Armageddon show a Size of like little Elephants to grown up Elephants, thats the correct size of a Meteor...
and here the correct power compare from a Meteor to an Meteoroid
Armageddon Meteoroid: bye bye Paris
Also good film for good Meteors/Meteoroids: Deep Impact
shows very god too, how much real power lies in such a Meteoroid, and that aren't still the biggest, that can crush us....comes an Asteroid, then we are all history and such stories, like in Armageddon will be just only Hollywood Fantasies - there will be then no Happy End for us
----------
God lag lol ..as if the game doesn't lag still how it is...GW2 will have a total new engine, ,much more improved and will have better graphics, then GW1, so much is 100% clear... they program a total new game graphics wise so they can be able to make much better looking Skill Effects from the start on.
In the end its ever the same, that it will be our computers, which will decide, if we lag, or not -.- when they are too weak for GW2, then its natural, that you will lag, then you just need only a better graphic card, and more RAM and maybe upgrade from DX9.c to DX10 too for optimal work.
Nobody of us can tell, if Anet will really make GW2 so compact, that you can play it again with absolute lowest specs on total ancient PC's ... if you really believe this, then don't be shocked, when it will be surely not so.
Game Requirements raise as even, as PC's become better and better over the years of development and when Anet wants really to make GW2 much more better than GW2 with significant improvements, then they can't surely avoid it, to let their minimum requirements of PC's also raise slightly - from somewhere must the power come, that shoukld enable the better graphics, the better game engine ect. and thed old requirements of GW1 surely won't enable this

With all the newer systems coming out before GW2, Anet would be able to find a way to make GW2 much flashier than GW. However, we have to remember that GW was started under the premise that even an old machine with 56k dialup is capable of running it, and that's the reason why it doesn't have very graphics intensive stuff like that.

Not really true. Teh meteor which created the Meteor Crate in Arizona was about basketball size when it hit.
The meteors in Armagedon were rubish anyways, too large for the dmage they did, and way too slow fro a meteor in the first place... Real meteors that size at that height over a town would blast half NY away withthe multiple MAch Sonic booms and the heat generated by the close fly by.
If you look at it in a realistic sence, then the meteors in GW are too big for anything which doenst leave a large visible crater.
Apart from that your allies can run about in meteor/firestorms without fearing any dmage... how realistic is that?
But... as this is a game and realism aside... it would be much better if the spells/skills actually did have better result animations. Mainly to be able to see what is happening and taking a little load off of the target caller in some situations.
